What is Active Release Techniques?

At Chicago Spine & Sports, we incorporate many different modalities and treatments based on our assessment to get patients feeling better in just a few visits. One particular technique we utilize is Active Release also known as ART.

Think of Active Release Techniques (ART) as massage’s crazy cousin that works harder, faster, and more efficiently. Unlike passive massage treatments, ART incorporates movement based soft tissue protocols that targets specific tissues. It helps athletes ranging from runners and triathletes to NFL players and Olympic weightlifters.

There are more than 500 established ART treatment protocols for the entire body that are often used for stubborn injuries like plantar fasciitis, knee pain, tennis elbow, rotator cuff tendonosis, or muscle strains. Instead of treating a general area, the provider uses his hands to feel for abnormal or damaged tissue in muscle, fascia, tendons, ligaments or nerves. Abnormalities include scar tissue, adhesions, and dense tissue. Often times, patients will see significant improvement in pain intensity and range of motion within the first couple sessions.
